Travel blogger or social networking site?

A recent column, "The best - and worst - places to go in Europe" by travel writer Rick Steves ended with a sage bit of advice: "Don't let any travel writer limit your freedom to find your own ultimates." That quote reminded me of a column I wrote about two years ago comparing social networking sites to your favorite travel reporter or blogger.

Depending on how you use them, either can be useful or useless.

Bloggers and travel reporters can be sources of useful information or not, just as sites like TripAdvisor can be a source of useful information or simply provide raw data. You have to use any resource wisely by applying your own judgment and experience to interpret the information you’re given.

That has been the case since newspapers had travel reporters (or restaurant or movie reviewers, for that matter). To use such a reporter's information well, you’d have to get to know whether your taste aligned with theirs. As a result, you’d either take their recommendations or steer clear.

Rick Steves is a great case in point. Rick, whom I met and interviewed when I was a reporter/talk show host at KING Radio in Seattle, is a great guy and a good writer, but his early point of view on how to travel was economically. That was the premise of his "Europe Through the Back Door" approach.

That's not the way I want to travel.I’m not going to avoid a place because he thinks it’s too pricey, nor am I going to rent a van and hunt down campgrounds in Switzerland to save a few bucks. His style is not my style.

That said, he has some great tips (like where to buy tickets to museums and other attractions to either save money or avoid long lines), so even someone whose style differs from yours may have some valuable advice.

Whether your inclination is toward a travel blogger or reporter, or a site like TripAdvisor, you have to do your homework.

Consider this: when my wife and I visited Venice in 2009, we stayed at The Hotel Al Ponte Antico, the hotel rated Number One by TripAdvisor members. In my subsequent review, I agreed that there were a lot of things to recommend it but was also clear about it being a small, intimate hotel (only nine rooms) located right on the Grand Canal. That meant two things: it was not the place to go if you wanted a hotel where you’d be more or less anonymous, and that canal-side rooms might not be the quietest. All things considered, though, I gave it a rating of five out of five.

Some months later, another reviewer gave it a two out of five, complaining about the two things I’d mentioned in my review: size (resulting in a lack of anonymity) and proximity to the Grand Canal.

In another instance, I posted a very detailed review of The Lucerne Hotel, a favorite of ours on New York’s Upper West Side. In that review, I explained that the hotel was in the process of renovating its rooms. I noted that the suites would be the last to be completed and recommended that anyone interested in a suite ask about the state of the rehab before booking.

A short time later, another member posted a review complaining that their suite “obviously needed updating.”

What does that mean? It probably means these people didn’t read into the reviews very far or they’d have seen what I (and others) had written. That’s part of being smart in your use of social media.

Another part is looking at the “credentials” of the reviewer. Has s/he posted more than one or two (or 10) reviews? In one instance, a fellow T/A member slammed the Four Points Hotel off the Magnificent Mile in Chicago because their “junior suite” didn’t have a separate room. That’s why it’s called a “junior” suite; obviously, that person wasn’t a very experienced traveler. More telling, however, was that the negative review (in which they complained that management wouldn’t upgrade them to a full suite for the same price) was the only one they had ever posted (at least under that particular screen name). That makes me think they established that account just to grind that particular axe.

In addition to looking at how many reviews a person has posted, look at whether the reviews are all good or all bad. Does the reviewer love everything, or can nothing make them happy?

Perhaps the Holy Grail, though it doesn’t happen often, is finding a reviewer who has reviewed an establishment you’ve already visited. If you’re lucky enough to find such a review, ask yourself how their experience aligns with your own. If you’re in sync, perfect!

Next, look at the property’s own web site. For my recent trip to Amsterdam, I briefly considered staying at a hotel called the Black Tulip after reading several reviews in which T/A members described as funky and avante garde. However, when I went to the hotel’s web site, I learned the hotel catered to gay men with a bent for S&M. Perhaps in the interest of remaining “family-friendly,” TripAdvisor said nothing about that…

My recommendation is to find a blogger (or columnist or travel reporter) with whom you're in sync - whose point of view fits with yours - and make him or her your first stop. To me, that's the best thing short of a recommendation from a trusted friend. Then, use social media, but use it wisely, which takes a fair bit of work. Finally, check out the web sites of the places you plan to visit to see what they have to say about themselves.

Strike by Lufthansa flight attendants ends

A strike by Lufthansa flight attendants at Frankfurt airport has ended, andthe airline says its flight operations are mostly back to normal.

The cabin crew strike at Frankfurt airport (FRA) called by the IndependentFlight Attendants Organization (UFO) on Friday, Aug. 31, has ended, and theairline says it is not aware of plans for any further strike action.However, the airline warns, the union may call for labor actions again on shortnotice, as was the case with Friday’s strike.

The strike forced Lufthansa to cancel about 190 flights from and toFrankfurt, among them six intercontinental connections. 26,000 passengers wereaffected.

In a statement, Lufthansa says it regrets any inconvenience caused by thestrike, and pledges do its utmost to minimize the impacts. “Passenger supportand service have top priority,” the airline says in its statement.

The carrier noted that the union announces strike actions on short notice,which creates additional problems because it limits passengers’ ability to makereliable travel plans.

Lufthansa has established apage on its web site for travelers to monitor for up-to-date information. Whenever possible, passengers who have registered their contact details intheir customer profile will be informed via SMS or email about delays,cancellations and rebookings.

Passengers can obtain information onthe status of their flights as early as the afternoon of the day before theirtravel and should check currently cancelled flights under Cancelledflights.

With Labor Day behind us and the holidays still a couple ofmonths away, the “shoulder season” can be a great time to travel.

 If you’re able to be flexible and are open to seeing yourdestination at times that may not be exactly optimal, the smaller crowds andthe fewer dollars or euros or yen you’ll be spending could make it more thanworthwhile.
Precisely when a specific destination has its shoulderseason varies a bit, so some research is necessary. 
I have recently been doing research into Iceland and learnedthat its shoulder seasons are September-October, and March-April. Bycomparison, the spring shoulder season in Europe runs a bit longer, throughmid-June.
For any destination, you’ll have to consider your personaltravel style, as well as your likes and dislikes.
My wife and I don’t mind the cold or wet weather – one ofour fondest memories is a January trip to London – so a trip to Iceland inOctober would fit well with our travel style while others, including travelwriter Rick Steves, recommend only traveling to Scandinavia during the heightof summer.
Bundling up can bring bargains
Travelers willing to visit the U.K. in the spring, forexample, can realize a significant savings on airfare over those who opt tovisit during the summer. They’re also likely to find more preferential hotelrates.
When making your shoulder season travel plans, it’s also agood idea to determine the date your airlines changes its fare structure. WhenI traveled to Amsterdam in 2009, the helpful agent at American Airlines, whichI was using my accumulated AAdvantage®miles to fly, recommended waiting until after Oct. 15 when the “price” dropped.Whether you’re paying with dollars or miles, it can literally pay to considerseveral different travel dates.
As of this writing, a round trip on British Airways fromSeattle (SEA) to London’s Heathrow airport (LHR) in March would costapproximately $1,061, while delaying the trip until July would bump that priceto $1,836 for a round-trip coach ticket.
Rates at London’s iconic Savoy hotel are commensuratelylower during the shoulder season as well. For the March trip, a room could be had for £345 per night, while rooms during the July time frame were £535 per night.
Because I’ve been investigating Iceland, I decided to compareround trip fares for the same dates and final destination on IcelandAir.
Why IcelandAir, of all carriers?
IcelandAir offers a unique feature: travelers bound from theU.S. or Canada to Europe can stop over in Reykjavik (KEF) for up to seven daysfor no additional airfare.  Of course,there will be the cost of lodging, but at least three advantages leapimmediately to mind.
If you’re traveling from the west coast, a stopover inReykjavik will break a lengthy flight into more manageable chunks. IcelandAir’snon-stop SEA-KEF flight is seven hours, 15 minutes, compared to BritishAirways’ SEA-LHR non-stop, which takes nine hours, 5 minutes. Granted, it onlytrims a couple of hours off total flight time but it will afford you theopportunity to visit another country and get another scar on your passport.
Round-trip fares with a three-night stopover in Reykjavik inMarch was $1,025, but the increase for July travel was much more modest.Summertime passage cost just $1,261.
Certainly shoulder season travel is the better bargain oneither carrier, but with a $600 savings by taking IcelandAir, one could spend$200 per night on a hotel room in Iceland in the summer, still spend about thesame total amount, and see another country during its peak.
In addition, the airline is offering a new class of serviceit calls “economy comfort special” which offers what the airline’s web sitecalls “Business class service, two-by-two seating, increased legroom,international electrical socket, business class check-in and lounge access,complimentary meals with wine and beer service.”

United Airlines spins with the best of them

While perusing United Airlines' web site this morning, I noticed this boast at the top of the page: MileagePlus: #1 in award seat availability. Immediately, I realized that United was stretching the truth.

Last May, I wrote a post about award seat availability, so I knew of a certainty that Southwest Airlines had been rated #1 with award seats available on 100% of its flights. You can't get better than that.

Because the headline conveniently ignored Southwest's superior status, I clicked on the link to assess the spin the Chicago-based carrier was putting on the facts.

The airline was, in fact, quoting the same survey I'd written about, but was parsing the results by claiming that it was #1 "Among United States global carriers (United, American Airlines, US Airways and Delta)."

In fairness, United did have impressive seat availability of 87.1%, according to the survey by IdeaWorks. However, so did AirTran (which was acquired by Southwest). More importantly (to United, at any rate) was the fact that AirTran is not a "United States global carrier." By that logic and with those qualifications, United was indeed "#1 in award seat availability."

Certainly, "#1" sounds a lot better than "tied for #2" but claiming to be #1 -- even in a headline -- without qualifying that claim, such as MileagePlus: #1 among global carriers in award seat availability, does more than stretch the truth; it damages credibility.

American Airlines pilots asked to return to bargaining table

Pilots at American Airlines, which has been in Chapter 11bankruptcy reorganization since Nov. 29, 2011, have been asked to come back tothe bargaining table.
Keith Wilson, president of the Allied Pilots Association(APA), announced Sept. 24 that he had received a letter from American,“expressing the desire to re-engage in negotiations with APA.” As a result,Wilson will meet with the union’s board of directors Set. 26 “to discuss management’sinvitation and determine APA’s next steps.”
At issue are contract concessions the airline says it needsfrom the pilots in order to survive.
At the heart of the matter is an August court ruling that,under the bankruptcy code and with court approval, the airline could impose itsown contract terms after the Allied Pilots Association (APA), the union thatrepresents its cockpit crews, rejected the company’s final offer.
When the court determined that the airline’s changes to thepilots’ contract were “reasonable and necessary to the company’s successfulrestructuring,” as the airline’s senior vice-president – people, put it in anAug. 17 letter, pilots began walking picket lines at airports and, the companysays, calling in sick at a rate 20% higher than 2011.
In addition, according to an e-mail the airline sent to itsAAdvantage® members, Americanhas seen an increase in the number of maintenance write-ups, “Many right at thetime of departure,” resulting in delays while the issues are addressed.
The union counters that the delays are not surprising giventhe age of the planes they fly, a reduction in the number of mechanics to workon them, and the parts needed to fix issues that arise.
“Although American Airlines operates the oldest fleet of anymajor U.S. carrier, management has decided to furlough a large number ofmechanics and close one of its largest maintenance facilities. Management alsodecided some time ago to reduce its inventory of spare parts,” the APA said ina Sept. 20 news release.
In a follow-up release the next day, the APA said its pilots“can’t ignore serious maintenance issues that could easily turn into safetyrisks,” and pointed out that “American Airlines has sustained record FAA finestotaling $162 million for improper aircraft maintenance procedures” during thepast year alone.
The union also denies it is making efforts to cause aslowdown or stage an illegal sickout. There is no “job action of any sort thatis organized, supported or sanctioned by the Allied Pilots Association,” theunion said in its news release, adding, “We have verified that pilot sick rateshave not deviated from normal historical rates. We have likewise verified thatcrew cancellations remain at normal rates.”
Passengers are increasingly stuck in the middle. In additionto delays, the airline is canceling many of its flights. NBCNewYork.comreported that, on Sept. 16 & 17, the airline “cancelled more flights ...than any other airline.”
Mad as hell, many passengers aren’t taking it any more, andthe shift away from American has begun to escalate. 
While CBS News quotes “several prominent travel gurus [who]say it’s too early to ‘book away’ from American,” a Google search using thewords “Avoid American Airlines” returned over 10 million results. The firstpage linked to articles with headlines including “Why you should avoidAmerican”, “Is it time to avoid American,” and other similar leads.
Whetherthe dispute will be resolved quickly remains to be seen. However, if theunion’s president feels the need to convene an in-person meeting of the boardrather than, say, a conference call or polling board members by phone, itdoesn’t bode well for a swift resolution to the conflict.

As much as I love what's going on in the PNW and with apologies to my brothers and sisters in PDX who made one hell of a MLS debut this spring, Sporting Kansas City is the story of the year. Y'all may laugh now but let Vermes & Co. win MLS Cup this year and see how many writer-types and Twitteratti jump on the bandwagon; guarantee it's going to get crowded.

Here we are with one game left to go on the MLS calendar and it's an all-AEG affair with the Galaxy pretty much hosting the Dynamo. So we can all rest assured that Tim Leiweke will be standing atop a podium in an AEG-built venue with a trophy, named after Uncle Phil Anschutz himself, at the end of 90 minutes come hell or high-water and I ain't mad at that.

However I am upset about the fact that rumors of MLS Cup being "Phil Anschutz Bobblehead Night" are just that, rumors. Still, if ever there was anyone in modern, American soccer worthy of being immortalized in miniature form and distributed to fans it is Mr. Anschutz. Without him MLS Cup doesn't exist.

How’s your French? Merde? Better ask for Rosetta Stone for Christmas then because if you really want to know what’s what with the Impact you’re going to need to read and listen to a lot of it. But if you are like me and only speak French after a bottle & a half of Bordeaux (and poorly even then) you can check out the latest episode of the SoccerPlus podcast because it features an English-language interview with Montreal coach Jessie Marsch.

The headline here is that he says the club are still batting around the idea of making a play for Nicolas Anelka. I repeat, Nicolas “Not Claude” Anelka. Marsch says “it’s still a possibility” and they “haven’t closed the door on it.” It would be one hell of a get, much better than that raft of aged Italians that’s been bandied about as possible DPs. Plus with him being French he could actually understand what the local socceratti are writing about him.

On second thought maybe that’s not the best move for a player as, erm, emotional as Nico.

NFL Films Producer Steve Sabol

Steve Sabol -- one of the founding members of "NFL Films" -- passed away this morning after battling brain cancer. He was 69.

CP's Take: As a kid I was sucked into the game of football not by the roar of the crowd but by the replay, a tight shot on the football and its super-slow motion spiral arching towards the receiver, a trade mark of Steve Sabol and his father Ed.  That sight, and the extended suspense it created, depicted everything football was, right to the 1/10th of a second and that moment of the completion and glory of the touchdown.

Steve had suffered a seizure in March 2011. Doctors discovered an inoperable tumor in his brain ... and he had been receiving treatment ever since.

Sabol co-founded NFL Films in the '60s with his father, Ed Sabol ... and together they revolutionized the way football fans watched the game ... with slow dramatic montages, compelling music and candid player soundbites from the field and the sidelines. Under Steve's leadership, NFL Films produced several iconic shows ... including, "Hard Knocks," "NFL Films Presents" and "Football Follies."

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell released a statement on Sabol's death ... saying, "Steve’s passion for football was matched by his incredible talent and energy. Steve’s legacy will be part of the NFL forever. He was a major contributor to the success of the NFL, a man who changed the way we look at football and sports, and a great friend.”

Friday Wrap Up - Cam Newton Edition

The "P" Word - Pathetic comes to mind. You knew it wouldn't be pretty, the pre game stats said NY all the way but the reality of it was uglier than you could have imagined.



Newton was 16-of-30 on the night for 242 yards. Zip zero zilch in the touchdown pass column and 3 interceptions. Sacked twice and rushed for 6 yards. His numbers don't live up to the Cam hype.

Charlotte's big bet has been Cam Newton and casual fans expected he would make Charlotte a dynasty, something to tell their grand kids about.

Reality check, it is still a team sport and until the rest of the team shows up with at least 1/2 the intensity of Steve Smith, Panther fans will be to be doing the walk of shame with 18 mins left on the clock.

Cedar Bonus Take: Until the rest of the team shows up, Cam Newton might want to "can" the superman gig.

On the bright side you can still cheer for Carolina as long as you don't mind yelling Go Gamecocks!

Obama's Pole (Poll) Numbers - If the phone dialer's and surveys are right will have another four years of Obamanation. Obama leads Mitt Romney across the board and no Pole (Poll)shows Obama trailing. Which might just work out to Romney's advantage. If the Democrats are as lazy as Republicans think then with a Obama led going into November maybe 1/2 the Obama voters will stay home on Tuesday November 6th.

CMPD DWI Check Point Nets 5 Drunks - CMPD and State Law Enforcement spent four hours idling on North Sharon Amity Road early this morning.  Pretty inefficient use of time but it does point to a bigger issue. In the "drag net" CMPD charged 32 people for driving with a revoked license, 28 charged because they had no license at all, as well as another 45 drivers with tag, inspection or proof of insurance violations.

The influx of Latino, and Asian drivers has sent the NCDMV into a tail spin. There is not effective way to control these drivers who thumb there nose at the laws most of us obey. These are people that should be removed from the streets. They don't have the basic skill set to pass a drivers test. Nuts!

Two camps have already formed those who say they are all guilty and those who say only the one who pulled the trigger McKenzie should be charged with Murder.

This whole "disrespect" thing is a black cultural holdover from the 80's. In Chicago it has helped pile up bodies of black youth, 21 so far this month. Chicago's homicide total for 2012 is expected to exceed 500. As of July, 201 out of 259 homicide victims were African American.

Of the 201 African American victims 143 were between 15-35 of those 133 had arrest histories.
Then there are the more than 1000 shooting victims through July 2012 who were shot, but didn't die.

KC is the exception to the rule, he didn't have an arrest record. But for the thugs who murdered KC, those who don't end up spending life in prison will return to the streets with a big target on their back and chances are pretty good, they will end up with a chalk outline.

CP Take: I'll call on Mecklenburg DA Murray to stand against violence and see that all of these thugs get long (Active) prison sentences of at least 20 years. As for the shooter, seems the death penalty is most appropriate. I strongly believe that many many people deserve a second chance, however when it comes to violent crimes the sad truth is once a thug always a thug.  In North Carolina the number of drug offenders behind bars is 3x the number of violent offenders. Something is wrong here. I don't need to be protected from the pot smokers or pot growers, protect me and my family, my neighbors and friends from rapists, and murderers, child molesters and armed robbers. Lock them up toss the key.

Violent offenders should not be released on parole, put on probation or given a second chance, these people are savages. No better than a pack of wild dogs.


Monday's Odd and Ends

Belk South Park Fire Hazard - This is the fire exit at Belk SouthPark, which is cluttered with boxes and stock. You got to love the sign "Do Not Block Fire Door"



The trouble is this exit is one of two on the second floor that in the event of a fire customers would use to escape death. So CP was pretty surprised when one of the floor managers offered, "It doesn't look that bad".  

The Belk manager is correct it doesn't look that bad, except with the power out, smoke filling rapidly and a store filled with Christmas shoppers the death toll would be stunning.  They would all die right here, with the first person to stumble and fall.

You can guess that if this is in plain sight there are more violations behind the doors.

Cedar Posts not being real pleased with the official response from Belk looked to Charlotte's Fire Department as plan "B".  The CFD has a "on-line" form that can be completed to "rat out" violators, so CP did just that. But a week later, nothing but crickets.

Rea Road Construction - The mess on Rea Road between Highway 51 and Colony continues. The good news is that after a week of traffic tie-ups the improvements to the intersection at 51 and Rea was completed Sunday afternoon.

Bank of America - Friday BofA announced 16,000 lay offs, that will happen before Christmas.

Greed of course is good, and with interest margins shrinking and banking fees coming under the watchful eyes of the Feds, Bank of America has little choice but to try and cut their way to profitability.

Laying off 16 thousand employees when just a week before they announced they were ready to grow strikes many as odd. But this is the way Bank of America has treated their customers for years.

It is more than a mile off the blacktop and down a winding gravel road to Percy's cabin at the lake. The road is bumpy yet soft thanks to the Carolina Pines that litter their needles like rust colored carpet atop the stones. The frost has come early this year, it is not yet October and with the frost comes the smell of burning fires and fresh coffee on a wood stove.

Percy's cabin is more shack than home, the kind of place that Eric Rudolph the Olympic park bomber would have called home while on the run for five years in the North Carolina mountains. There is not even the slightest amount of insulation, in fact some of the cedar planks that cover the walls show daylight as the sun first beams across the lake in the early dawn.

The water comes from a spring up the side of the mountain that collects into a concrete tank barely visible half way up the hill and tucked into the woods. Water pressure is supplied by gravity and the 200 foot run down to the house.

The sound the gravel popping under the tires of my SUV quiets as I roll to a stop. The stillness of the lake is stunning in the early morning sun beams of gold as the fog gently lifts and then falls over the tree tops. There are no signs of life inside the cabin but the fire is burning and the front door's ajar.

Percy is old enough that I often fear I'll find him dead one morning and if that be the case today, I'll take great relief knowing that he passed in his sleep in the place his father built nearly 100 years ago.

A raspy familiar voice from around the back side of the shed leaves me startled and relived at the same time.

"Whatcha no good?" Percy calls out.

"Not much, just looking for the old coot, who owns this piece of shit house in the middle of God's majestic wilderness" I figure I'd get that jab in before he says something about my WalMart boots.

"I see's you wearing your fancy boots again" Percy doesn't miss a thing. "You ready to go hunting?"

"Yep", I reply as Percy shoves a Styrofoam cup of black coffee my way.

This is no big game hunt Mr. Carven has invited me on, while it is deer season bears can't be tracked until mid October. Nope, no wall trophies today because we are going to bag squirrels and/or chipmunks.

No doubt some people consider them, adorable little creatures. But before anyone gets all city slicker squeamish on me let me explain at even Percy Craven won't eat a squirrel. Only thing nastier tasting Percy can attest to this fact, is a opossum. I on the other hand have tasted neither and never intend to.

So, we won't be frying up Rocky the Squirrel today, rather those the little varmints will be "shot" for their tails. It just happens that squirrel and chipmunk tails make great flies for trout fishing.

What Percy doesn't keep to make his own trout flies he sells to a artificial lure company in Kingsport, Tennessee. He'll get a dollar a tail, plus his shipping costs.

The trick to shooting squirrels you have to use a 22 with a scope and a steady hand. Head shot and the scope makes it a rather personal interaction with the squirrel. Percy has a Boykin Spaniel named Jake who spent the night snoozing next to the wood stove. Jake's job is to run in circles until the squirrels start chattering. The squirrels sound off about the dog and Percy takes careful aim and drops the squirrel from 30 feet up. Jake then brings the now dead squirrel to Percy and the process is repeated over and over.

It takes about three hours to bring down around 100 squirrels. Percy killed 99 and myself 1. The chipmunks are spared, Jake is wore out, and the coffee inside me is now cold, so we start our walk back to the cabin a 1/2 a mile away.

I ask Percy if it bothers him killing so many animals at one time. His answer a simple "nope". Then he adds: "I guess if it bothered them they would move away, maybe over the ridge or up the road".

Back at the cabin Percy makes another pot of coffee, and begins sorting the tails, selecting the best for himself. The others are put in zip lock bags, boxed and labled to an address in Kingsport and before I know it we are headed the the post office.

We drive along in silence until Percy speaks: "Whatcha thinking about".

"Dead squirrels" I answer.

"I see, well if you're worrying about a giant mother squirrel that is gonna come charging out of the woods after us, forget about it, I shot her last year right between the eyes. Dropped her dead in her tracks back there a spell."

I play along, "What if there's another one?"

Percy holds up a large hand gun: "That's why I brought this along, you never know."

We round the turn, crest a ridge and and the road swings down and to the right, and in the clearing ahead is a lone buck. The buck stands his ground no more than ten feet from the edge of the road.

I slow down to a crawl and the buck stays put. Sixteen point bucks are rare this close to town and I look to Percy as I stop the truck. It is broad daylight at least a mile from anyone. It is deer season. Percy Craven could step out of the truck walk along the road 20 yards and with one shot have the biggest deer of his life.

The stands perfectly still, looking right at us and the truck. I look at Percy and he looks at the buck. Then without waring Percy speaks up:

"Guess we better go",  and he reaches across the cab of the truck and taps the horn. The sound sends the buck "tail high" and snorting into the woods.

I look at Percy like he's lost his mind, and he just shakes his head and says, "some other day".

We drive on to the Post Office in silence.

Belk South Park Fire Hazard - This is the fire exit at Belk SouthPark, which is cluttered with boxes and stock. You got to love the sign "Do Not Block Fire Door"



The trouble is this exit is one of two on the second floor that in the event of a fire customers would use to escape death. So CP was pretty surprised when one of the floor managers offered, "It doesn't look that bad".  

The Belk manager is correct it doesn't look that bad, except with the power out, smoke filling rapidly and a store filled with Christmas shoppers the death toll would be stunning.  They would all die right here, with the first person to stumble and fall.

You can guess that if this is in plain sight there are more violations behind the doors.

Cedar Posts not being real pleased with the official response from Belk looked to Charlotte's Fire Department as plan "B".  The CFD has a "on-line" form that can be completed to "rat out" violators, so CP did just that. But a week later, nothing but crickets.

Rea Road Construction - The mess on Rea Road between Highway 51 and Colony continues. The good news is that after a week of traffic tie-ups the improvements to the intersection at 51 and Rea was completed Sunday afternoon.

Bank of America - Friday BofA announced 16,000 lay offs, that will happen before Christmas.

Greed of course is good, and with interest margins shrinking and banking fees coming under the watchful eyes of the Feds, Bank of America has little choice but to try and cut their way to profitability.

Laying off 16 thousand employees when just a week before they announced they were ready to grow strikes many as odd. But this is the way Bank of America has treated their customers for years.

ANA to add second daily flight from NYC to Tokyo

On October 28, travelers from JFK to Japan will have twoflight options when flying ANA, the go-to-market name for All Nippon Airways.

Currently, ANA’s only non-stop leaves JFK at 12:30 p.m.,arriving at Tokyo’s Narita Airport (NRT) at 3:25 p.m. the next day. StartingOctober 28, the carrier will add a second flight that leaves JFK at 5:55 p.m.and arrives at NRT at 9:05 p.m. Return flights leave at 11:00 a.m. and 4:45p.m. local time, arriving at JFK at 9:30 a.m. and 3:15 p.m., respectively, onthe same day the flight departed. In October, the departure time of the earlierflight will be moved to 12:15 p.m.
My first thought was that the 5:55 p.m. departure from JFKmight be arriving uncomfortably late in the day, considering that passengershave to clear customs, then face a commute of approximately an hour into Tokyo.
I was pleased to learn that ANA offers a complimentarylimousine car service to ANA Mileage Club members traveling on the afternoonflight in either First class or Business class, so it will pay to join theMileage Club before your trip.
As of this writing on Sept. 12, an economy ticket for theafternoon flight leaving Sunday, October 28 and returning the following Sunday,November 4, can be purchased for as low as $1,393.80, while the lowest BusinessClass round trip ticket is $7,070.80, and First Class seats are available foras low as $15,094.80.
Generally, the earlier departures from both JFK and NRTcarried higher prices than the later departures.
Flight times to NRT are approximately 14 hours, 10 minutes,while the return flights are 12 hours, 30 minutes. Either way, that’s a longtime in an airline seat, which makes a Business or First Class seat all themore appealing.
Currently, the airline is operating Boeing 777 airliners onthis route.  According to SeatGuru.com,economy seats on ANA extended-range 777s feature a 31” pitch (the distance fromthe back of your seat to the seatback in front of you) and 16.5” width. PremiumEconomy seats, available on the 777-300ER, offer 38” pitch and 18.5” width. Theextra space would be most welcome on flights of 12 to 14 hours.
ANA has an excellent reputation in the travel industry andboasts of a number of awards, including being named Best Transpacific Airlinein 2012 by the airline review web site SKYTRAX.
United, American, US Airways, and Japan Airlines also offernon-stops from JFK to NRT.
All else bring equal, I recommend flying an airline operatedby the country for which you’re headed. That way, you begin experiencing someof the flavor of your destination as soon as you board the aircraft rather thanwaiting until after you’ve cleared customs upon arrival.

Geeking out over the 787 Dreamliner

The first Boeing 787 Dreamliner was delivered one week short of a year ago, on Sept. 26, 2011, to Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA). One monthlater, on Oct. 26, the pioneering aircraft made its first passenger flight, fromTokyo’s Narita airport (NRT) to Hong Kong (HKG).
In addition to being a frequent traveler I’m also a3,400-hour pilot, so I have a very keen interest in this revolutionaryairplane.
Boeing 787 Dreamliner takes offMuch has been written aboutthis jet since the program launched in April 2004, thanks to a record orderfrom ANA. Writers have waxed rhapsodic about the innovations the plane wouldemploy, and how riding in it would be a newtype of passenger experience. If you’ve followedthe development of this aircraft, you likely know some of the high-level facts.If not, allow me to bring you up to speed.
Probably thebiggest, and most pivotal, innovation in the Dreamliner is the use of carbonfiber composite material rather than aluminum. The composite makes up 50% ofthe primary structure including the fuselage and wings, thus making it strongerand lighter than comparable mid-sized commercial jets. Recently, one ofBoeing’s salespeople gave me a promotional 787 pen with its pocket clip made ofthat very same carbon fiber material (pictured at right). The strength of thecarbon fiber makes several additional features possible.
Because it’sstronger, the fuselage can accommodate higher cabin pressure, meaning lessfatigue for its passengers. Typically, airliners are pressurized to altitudesequivalent to 6,500 to 7,000 feet above sea level, or the altitude ofFlagstaff, Ariz., or Lake Tahoe. Its stronger structure allows the 787 to bepressurized to the equivalent of 6,000 feet above sea level, or the altitude ofColorado Springs.
Studies showed that reducing the cabin altitude to 6,000’ dramatically reducedthe level of fatigue passengers experienced. Interestingly, lowering thealtitude further provided almost no additional benefit, according to Boeing.

Because it’sstronger, the fuselage can also accommodate larger windows. Although passengersclearly preferred larger windows, they caused engineering challenges. The loadsthe airplane structure must carry are more easily handled when a fuselage hasfewer, or smaller, cutouts for doors and windows. With its stronger fuselage,the 787 can manage the loads despite the larger cutouts.
With a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 500,000 pounds, the787 falls into the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) classificationof a “heavy” jet (anything over 300,000 pounds MTOW), but it’s stillconsiderably lighter than a 777-300ER, which has a MTOW of 774,600 pounds, a747-8 freighter, with a MTOW of 975,000 pounds, or the massive AirbusA-380-800. With a MTOW of 1,254,000 pounds, the A-380 has its own designationof “super.”
The aircraft’s comparatively lighterweight and use of engines that are among the most powerful manufacturedtoday allow the Dreamliner to achieve Mach 0.85 (85% of the speed of sound),the same top speed as the 777. Most other commercial jetliners top out at Mach 0.8. Despite that, theengines are fuel-efficient, and the plane uses 20% less fuel than any otherairplane of its size, according to Boeing data.
As of this writing, neither Rolls-Royce nor GE, the twoengine manufacturers for the 787, has offered me a sample turbine blade from either engine...
The speed of sound, by the way, varies depending almostentirely on the temperature of the air. The colder the air, the denser it isand the slower sound travels. To determine the speed of sound in knots, multiplethe square root of the absolute temperature in degrees Kelvin (Celsius + 273° to obtain the absolute temperature), by38.94. To obtain miles per hour, multiply by 45. But I digress.
I said I was geeking out; I will not apologize.
The Dreamliner’s interior is reportedly quieter than moreconventional aircraft; the air is cleaner and less drying; and the cabin ispressurized to a lower altitude, all of which reduce fatigue. The aircraft usesLEDs and mood lighting in the cabin and, as if to add icing to the cake, itswindows are 30% larger and provide passengers with a better view than any othercommercial aircraft.
Its wingspan of 197’ is just slightly smaller than the199’11” wingspan of the 777, a wide body that can carry over 300 passengers ina three-class configuration. The Dreamliner can carry between 210 and 250passengers.
But, just as the map is not the territory, words do not anaircraft make, nor can they adequately describe the experience of riding inone, as even one of Boeing’s P-R people acknowledged.
“There are no words we could put on paper to explain howspecial the airplane is,” Lori Gunter wrote to me in an e-mail. In fact, shesaid, passengers have found that “[T]he new high level of comfort andconvenience becomes the new norm about 20 minutes into the flight and it’s notuntil they fly on another airplane following their 787 flight that they realizehow important all the new features are.”
Since the first delivery about a year ago, 20 moreDreamliners have been delivered, including another dozen to ANA and five toJapan Airlines. However, only a few of that already-small number are carryingpassengers to and from the United States.
Japan Airlines put its firstDreamliner on its new Tokyo-Boston route on April 22.  ANA will introduce the Dreamliner on its Seattle-Tokyo route onOct. 1, and will operate the 787 on the San Jose, Calif.-Tokyo (SJC-NRT)non-stop route that kicks off Jan. 11, 2013.The other 787s are operating inthe eastern hemisphere.ANA’s other 787s currentlyoperate out of Haneda airport (HND) and fly to Okayama; Hiroshima; Beijing,China; and Frankfurt, Germany. HND, located 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) south ofTokyo, handles almost all domestic flights to and from Tokyo, while NRT handlesthe majority of international flights. Ethiopian Air is using its sole787 on the route between Addis Ababa and Tel Aviv, Israel, while Air India isusing its just-delivered Dreamliner for domestic service.For all these reasons, plus (honestly) getting to dosomething before a whole lot of other people, it was with great pleasure that Iaccepted an offer to be part of ANA’s media tour to introduce the Dreamliner topassengers traveling between Seattle and Tokyo. The tour – and my reports,however inadequate my words and photos may prove to be – will take place nextmonth.

ANA introduces Dreamliners to West Coast

ANA, the go-to-market name for All Nippon Airways,will debut a new 787 Dreamliner on its recently begun Seattle-to-Tokyo route onMonday, October 1, marking the first opportunity for air travelers on the West Coast of the United States or Canada to ride this remarkable new aircraft.

ANA began non-stop service between Seattle (SEA) and Tokyo’sNarita (NRT) airports July 25 using a Boeing 777. The airline took delivery ofthe Dreamliner it will be using on the route August 30 and since then has beenoutfitting the plane and making it ready for its first paying passengers.

Configured for long-haul flights, ANA devotes more than halfthe Dreamliner’s cabin space to Business Class, with the rest serving economypassengers.
There are 46 lie-flat Business Class seats configured insuch a way that each and every seat has direct access to an aisle. No climbingover fellow passengers to stretch your legs or go to the lav. In addition, mysources say Business Class will have at least two lavatories that areconsiderably larger and more luxurious than the normal airline loo. Officially called the “premium lav,” they were at one point, predictably, called the “Dream Lav.”
The 112 Economy Class seats are among the widest in theindustry, at 18.5” according to SeatGuru.com. At 31”, the pitch (the distancefrom your seat back to the back of the seat in front of you) is the same as onthe 777s operated by United and Delta on their SEA-NRT routes, thoughpassengers on the 777s can choose EconomyPlus® or Economy ComfortTM Class respectively, for ahigher fare than regular economy.
However, those triple-7s carry more passengers in economyalone than in an entire ANA 787, so economy passengers will be bumpingshoulders with far more folks getting on and off – and waiting to get throughcustoms at the end of their flight – than economy passengers on ANA’sDreamliner.
It’s worth noting that the Dreamliners serving ANA’s WestCoast routes do not have a section labeled “First Class.”
Flights will leave SEA at 1:15 p.m. and arrive at NRT at3:15 p.m. local time the next day, as the flights cross the international dateline.  Return flights leave at 5:25 p.m.local time, arriving in Seattle at 10:55 a.m. on the same day the flightdeparted, again owing to crossing the international date line.
As of this writing on Sept. 22, an economy ticket forflights leaving October 1 and returning October 5 can be purchased for as lowas $1,400.60, while the lowest Business Class round trip ticket is $8,723.60.
Next year, passengers traveling from the San Francisco Bayarea will be able to board the Dreamliner closer to home. ANA will start 787service between San Jose’s Norman Y. Mineta Airport (SJC) and NRT on January11.

Meanwhile, on Sept. 21, ANA announced it had ordered 11 more787s, bringing its total order to 66, the most of any airline. OnlyInternational Lease Finance Corporation, a company that buys aircraft andleases them to airlines, has ordered more.
All 11 of the newaircraft will be the 787-9 model and will be delivered between fiscal year 2018and 2021. This will give ANA a fleet of 36 787-8 aircraft and 30 787-9versions, according to ANA’s news release.

First North American airline takes delivery of a Dreamliner

United Airlines, the first airline to operate the 767 and 777, has becomethe first North American airline to take delivery of a 787 Dreamliner.

The Chicago-based carrier closed the deal Sept. 22 and will fly theDreamliner from Boeing Field (BFI) in Seattle tothe airline's hub at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) for amonth-long training and certification process before placing it into passengerservice.

The aircraft is the 24th Dreamliner Boeing has delivered to date,and is the first of five new Dreamliners United expects to receive this year,according to its news release announcing the transaction.

The first Dreamliner will begin flying between IAH and other United hubs includingSan Francisco (SFO), Los Angeles (LAX), Chicago’s O’Hare (ORD), and Newark(EWR).

United had previously said the airliner would enter service as soon asthe training and certification process was complete. It has since firmed upplans for its inaugural commercial flight to depart IAH for ORD at 7:25 a.m.Sunday, Nov. 4.

United’s next three Dreamliners, to be delivered by the end of November,will begin serving additional domestic routes, while the 5thDreamliner is scheduled to begin international flights on Dec. 4.

According to Boeing data, half the Dreamliners United has ordered will beequipped with Rolls Royce Trent 100 engines, while the other half will beequipped with General Electric GEnx engines. United’s first Dreamliner has theGE engines.

The plane is configured with 36 seats in Business/First, 70 seats in EconomyPlus®, and 113 seats in Economy.

As I’ve mentioned in previous blog posts, writers have waxed rhapsodic aboutthe innovations the plane employs, and how riding in it will be a new type of passenger experience. A quieterinterior, improved interior lighting, windows that are 30% larger than othercommercial aircraft, an improved cabin ventilation system, and a lower cabinpressure altitude will all combine to provide passengers will a lessstressful, more comfortable travel experience.

"We are excited for our customers and co-workers to experience thisgame-changing aircraft," Jeff Smisek, United’s president and CEO, said ina statement.

Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan on Saturday derided President Obama’s space program and called his administration’s requirement that hospitals and universities, including Catholic ones, be required to offer contraception an “assault on religious liberty.”


Ryan promised at a town hall meeting in Orlando that GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney would reverse the contraception mandate on “Day 1″ if he is elected president. The mandate requiring all insurance plans to include access to contraception was part of Obama’s health care overhaul.

Ryan’s comments came in a response to a woman’s question about whether he would ask Vice President Joe Biden in a debate how he reconciles his views as a Roman Catholic with the Democratic Party platform.

Both Ryan and Biden are Catholic.

“It will be gone. I can guarantee you that,” Ryan told the crowd of 2,200 supporters in an arena at the University of Central Florida.

Ryan handled that question I think in an appropriate manner. As a public official running for one of the highest offices in the land I think it would be very improper for him to get personal on Biden. If Biden or for that matter Ryan's positon causes a scandal to the Catholic faithful that is for us to discuss not the Biden or Ryan IMHO.

Now lets us look at the Senate Majority Leader tonight :

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he agrees with a fellow Mormon who wrote recently that Mitt Romney has "sullied" the LDS faith and that the GOP presidential candidate is "not the face of Mormonism."


Reid, a Mormon Democrat from Nevada, blasted Romney in a conference call for reporters over a litany of things the Republican nominee has said recently. And Reid added that Latter-day Saints aren’t buying Romney’s rhetoric.

"He’s coming to a state where there are a lot of members of the LDS Church," Reid said in advance of Romney’s Friday visit to Nevada. "They understand that he is not the face of Mormonism .

I think that crosses a line. Again that is for the Mormon faithful to discuss. But there is some a tad distasteful about the Senate Mahority leader of the U.S. getting so personal as to this issue. It also seems like bad civics.

I am not exactly sure where the line is in all this. But at this moment Biden , Reid, Romney and Ryan are not some backbencher from Idaho. I think it was crossed here.

Denny Burk , associate Professor of Biblical Studies at  the Baptist  Boyce College , makes an interesting observation on Ann Rice who appears to now procliam not only is not a Catholic but now is no longer a Christian at  Anne Rice’s Apostasy ( click to see her vid ).



........She knew that the Roman Catholic Church would never sanction same-sex marriage, but she was surprised that the church would actively oppose it. When she heard that, she knew she could no longer stay in the church. In short, the church’s stance on homosexuality appears to have been a watershed for her.

In this latest video, it’s interesting that she makes a passing reference to homosexuality again. She says that a person can no more choose to have faith than one can choose to be a homosexual. She says that faith—like sexual orientation—is something you discover, not something you choose. And she has discovered that she no longer believes.

I don’t know to what extent the Bible’s teaching about homosexuality influenced her decision to apostatize. I know that she used to cite D. A. Carson as one of her favorite biblical interpreters. That seems to suggest that she takes a pretty straightforward reading of scripture when it comes to controversial topics. Perhaps she just could not abide what the scripture says on these things. Rather than reinterpreting scripture or explaining it away (as many liberal theologians do), she was intellectually honest enough just to walk away.

I don’t pretend to know all the reasons for Rice’s falling away. But I do know that the Lord’s arm is not too short to save (Isaiah 59:1). That alone is more than enough reason to pray and to hope that her story doesn’t dead-end with this latest news. Maybe there’s a real and lasting conversion in the offing. I hope and pray that there will be.







Religion Writer Mark Silk Turns History of Catholic Protestant Conflict Into HHS Contraception Mandate Piece

Mark Silk is a Professor of Religion in Public Life at Trinity College . He also is a columnist at the Religion News Service and is part of the new Religion and Politics site .So he is one of these folks that is widely read.

He had an interesting column dealing with Irish Catholics, Yale , taxes and how the battles between Catholics and Protestants  died out in Connecticut . See Connecticut: A Blogger Revisits the Yale Athletic Fields .

However for some reason he seems to give a sort of Op-Ed  ( though I might be misleading his intent ) on the HHS Contraception mandate in the last two paragraphs.

The end of the Irish-Yankee struggle in Connecticut did not come overnight. It may be marked by the 1961 decision of Estelle Griswold, head of the Planned Parenthood League of Connecticut, and Dr. C. Lee Buxton, a professor of medicine at Yale, to open a birth control clinic in New Haven in order to challenge the state’s 1879 law banning contraception. The law was vigorously supported by the Catholic Church, but in the end to no avail. In 1965, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down Griswold v. Connecticut, a landmark decision that, by declaring the law banning contraception unconstitutional via a constitutional right of privacy, laid the basis for Roe v. Wade.



Since then, Connecticut has become a place where appeals to religion are looked at as wholly inappropriate in a political setting. As in other parts of New England, memories of ethno-religious contention have led to an embrace of church-state separation unequalled anywhere else in the country. For those who remember Griswold, it is somewhat ironic that a Connecticut bishop, William Lori of Bridgeport—recently made Archbishop of Baltimore—has this year been leading the National Conference of Catholic Bishops’ charge against the federal mandate that insurance plans cover contraceptive services for women free of charge. Outside Connecticut, such objections to mandated contraception coverage have gained traction. It’s a safe bet, however, that Lori’s cause will attract only minimal support in the land of steady habits.

What is "ironic" is how much of that is wrong.

 First for many people Connecticut has not been seen recently as such a place of Church / State Separation  See here .

However what is very ironic is it turns the Griswold right of privacy on it's head. The Griswold Right to privacy casesare still some what disputed at least in the Academy at times. WHERE IS RIGHT TO PRIVACY in the document the argument goes.

Basically the reasoning of these cases  is there are some matters so intimate so private that the Government has no competence or ability to go into.

  From Griswold quoting  Mr. Justice Brandeis, dissenting opinion  in Olmstead v. United States :

"The protection guaranteed by the [Fourth and Fifth] Amendments is much broader in scope. The makers of our Constitution undertook to secure conditions favorable to the pursuit of happiness. They recognized the significance of man's spiritual nature of his feelings and of his intellect. They knew that only a part of the pain, pleasure and satisfactions of life are to be found in material things. They sought to protect Americans in their beliefs, their thoughts, their emotions and their sensations. They conferred, as against the Government, the right to be let alone -- the most comprehensive of rights and the right most valued by civilized men. "


Later this right to contraception  and the right to privacy and all that went with it  was expanded to unmarried couples in Eisenstadt v. Baird :


"If the right of privacy means anything, it is the right of the individual, married or single, to be free from unwarranted governmental intrusion into matters so fundamentally affecting a person as the decision whether to bear or beget a child."


Of course this logic was extended to abortion rights in the famous Roe V Wade case.

This line of cases was recently revisited in the important Lawence V Texas case.


...The laws involved in Bowers and here are, to be sure, statutes that purport to do no more than prohibit a particular sexual act. Their penalties and purposes, though, have more farreaching consequences, touching upon the most private human conduct, sexual behavior, and in the most private of places, the home. The statutes do seek to control a personal relationship that, whether or not entitled to formal recognition in the law, is within the liberty of persons to choose without being punished as criminals....

..It suffices for us to acknowledge that adults may choose to enter upon this relationship in the confines of their homes and their own private lives and still retain their dignity as free persons. When sexuality finds overt expression in intimate conduct with another person, the conduct can be but one element in a personal bond that is more enduring. The liberty protected by the Constitution allows homosexual persons the right to make this choice..
and the Court quoted the famous quote from Casey :

These matters, involving the most intimate and personal choices a person may make in a lifetime, choices central to personal dignity and autonomy, are central to the liberty protected by the Fourteenth Amendment. At the heart of liberty is the right to define one's own concept of existence, of meaning, of the universe, and of the mystery of human life. Beliefs about these matters could not define the attributes of personhood were they formed under compulsion of the State." Ibid.
Now the interesting point we have gone from Government stay out to now Government telling  you , me , the man  behind the tree , and RELIGIOUS orgs that you are mandated to affirm these right by giving it assistance.

We can see this through the HHS Contraception mandate and all be damned if  it conflicts with our "own concept of existence, of meaning, of the universe, and of the mystery of human life."

In fact as to the Lawrence opinion dealing with homosexual acts we now have these words from Judge Walker’s opinion in the famous Prop 8 case

Plaintiffs seek to have the state recognize their committed relationships, and plaintiffs’ relationships are consistent with the core of the history, tradition and practice of marriage in the United States. Perry and Stier seek to be spouses;they seek the mutual obligation and honor that attend marriage, Zarrillo and Katami seek recognition from the state that their union is “a coming together for better or for worse, hopefully enduring, and intimate to the degree of being sacred.” Griswold, 381 US at 486.
In othewordsr we have gone from the State staying  out to people having a right to societal affirmation for certain conduct. That of course triggers all sort of things including many sanctions for those that don't agree. Now that is not the only argument for gay marriage of course. However that societal affirmation and "RIGHT" to it as see is in the mix.

Returning to the immediate matter of the HHS Contraception mandate related matters, and "irony" one wonders if people do not see the threat here that endorse all these rights. Christian Conservatives are often accused of escalating the "culture wars"  ,but nothing escalates something more than having to pay for something that goes against your morals.

For instance two days ago the Catholic Bishop of Springfield the dramatic change in the Democratic Platform :


Even more troubling is that this whole discussion about God in the platform is a distraction from more disturbing matters that have been included in the platform. In 1992 Presidential candidate Bill Clinton famously said that abortion should be "safe, legal and rare." That was the party's official position until 2008. Apparently "rare" is so last century that it had to be dropped, because now the Democratic Party Platform says that abortion should be "safe and legal." Moreover the Democratic Party Platform supports the right to abortion "regardless of the ability to pay." Well, there are only three ways for that to happen: either taxpayers will be required to fund abortion, or insurance companies will be required to pay for them (as they are now required to pay for contraception), or hospitals will be forced to perform them for free.

Again another step that seems to put some of the basic logic of the Griswold cases on their head. That is we go from  GOVT stay out to GOVT says you must help affirm these choices.

Needless to say Griswold says nothing about how religious groups must affirm these choices by a paying for services. Further it is indeed "irony" that the HHS Mandate that sets new  precedents and limits for what is "religious" is being used as great example of the Separation of Church and State.

In other words I think Mr Silk is out in left field. I am clueless how the HHS Mandate helps the cause and spirit of New England viewpoints of Separation of Church and State.
