Continental quietly flies away

Thursday, September 30, 2010, will officially mark the end of Continental Airlines.  Originally started in 1934, as Varney Speed Lines.  Today, Continental Airlines was officially merged into United Continental Holdings.  Though the history of Continental has had its ups and downs.

The 80's marked turbulent times for Continental, as Texas Air, headed by Frank Lorenzo, took over Continental, only to file chapter 11 one year later.  Lorenzo created a subsidiary carrier, New York Air, and bought bankrupt carriers People Express and Frontier.  Loaded with debt, trouble with labor unions, and the first Gulf War, Continental filed Chapter 11 for the second time in 10 years.
The final chapter for Continental has begun as today they become a part of United Continental Holdings
In 1995 the former head of Boeing, Gordon Bethune, took over.  Bethune restored the airline's glory.  Not only had Continental become profitable, they became a model for supreme service and happy employees.

Continental has had a storied history.  Yesterday, the final chapter began.  United Continental Holdings officially created the largest airline in the world.  Within the next two years, the companies will merge and operate under one certificate.  Sadly, one of the most storied airlines will disappear!
